Art and Design
We believe that Art and Design are integral to a balanced curriculum. We aim to provide children with a rich curriculum that encourages exploration, experimentation, and discovery. Art is taught discretely and within in other subjects. We try, wherever possible, to make links with other subjects. That might be preparing props or set pieces for a school performance, making close and careful observational drawings in science or making a Misericord!
Children will have the opportunity to experiment with mixed media, clay, felt making, print making and sewing but this list is limitless. We are keen to engage with children’s interests and find artistic ways to express those interests.
We want children to believe they are artists and not be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes can often produce the most interesting effects!
Music plays a big part in Shocklach school life. Children in Foxes class have free access to a variety of musical instruments to play and they enjoy learning to sing lots of different songs and rhymes old and new. The woodland classroom is a great place to make music and children regularly make their own natural instruments. Squirrels take part in AmaSing which gets us involved in shows and music workshops with other schools, both face to face and online.
Badgers class learn to play a variety of stringed instruments through the wider ops programme. As a whole school we have two school productions a year, which offer individuals a chance to share their musical talents from singing to guitar, piano, keyboard, and violins. In addition, we have Harvest, Easter and Christingle services at church which all feature singing and music. Music for Life provides music lessons weekly and offer a choice of instrument tuition from Year one upwards.
