Forest Life

Forest School originated in Sweden in the 1950’s, when a retired soldier started to teach children about the natural environment through stories, songs and practical hands-on experiences.  Educators in Denmark soon adopted these ideas and Forest School then spread through most of Scandinavia.  Forest School did not reach our shores until the 1990’s but since then it has found a place in many Primary Schools.

Forest School Ethos

Forest School is about playing and exploring in a forest environment.  It utilises the natural resources found there to enhance learning, develop a deep appreciation and empathy for nature.  The emphasis for learning is child centred and activities promote social, emotional development and wellbeing.

Benefits Of Forest School

Children are given vast opportunities to develop their physical strength.  Navigating uneven ground, carrying logs, and using tools all helps to develop or improve gross and fine motor skills.  Children will gain first-hand experience of the weather and the changing seasons.  They also develop their knowledge of our native flora and fauna.  Forest School enables children to develop their learning in a different environment.  Learning outside allows children to shine and demonstrate skills and knowledge that are often missed inside the classroom.  The list really is endless!  Most importantly the foundations for learning are really nurtured during Forest School sessions: self-esteem, self-belief, confidence, communication and language, motivation, resilience, and concentration.

Children in Squirrels and Badgers class have one Forest School session every fortnight led by a fully qualified Forest School leader from Edsential, John Thorpe. In these sessions the children will continue to build their skills of fire lighting and tool use. They will also explore orienteering and develop their knot tying skills. We offer an after-school Forest School club every Wednesday for Badgers and Squirrels class.
